aint no party like a bmx party

Jarrod Allen's After Hours video contest and party is now over, and santa cruz is better for it. For those of you who didnt already know, Jarrod, of 2-hip fame and santa cruz fame, had a contest running all week, from the 26th through the 31st. Jarrod invited premiere street shredders from as far away as NYC and LA, and as close as Santa Cruz and Gilroy to come ride a variety of spots, with each regional team going out to film for one night. Im not sure how much help Jarrod had, but I understood it to be very little, and he pulled off the whole thing perfectly. I didnt get to see any of the riding in person, but Jarrod had a big party planned at seabright brewery to give out awards and showcase the riding and have a little fun.
On saturday night Seabright Browery, seen here but picture the unicycles as little bikes, was descended upon by what seemed to be hundreds of bmxers (probably more like 75 or so). The beer flowed freely, in all these varieties, and i got a hold of a few too many free drink tickets to really report on what happened, but here is what I can recall through the haze. Bmxs clogged the bike rack and quite a few young guns were in the house enjoying themselves too much (Anthony Quiroz you know I mean you). Jarrod had worked real hard cause he had a dvd, with a full menu, and sections from all the teams edited together. I think the crews were: NYC, SF, LA, Locals, and NORCAL. I've always been of the opinion that santa cruz is a barren wasteland when it come to street, but everyone in the video proved me wrong. They went to a minimum of spots but they absolutely shut them down. Standouts included Stevo Scoffone (who won the style award), Jake Honesto, Joey Cobbs, Marlon Europe, Cisco, Kurtis....actually everyone did something amazing. Again, i was in no shape to remember but I think that Joey Cobbs did a 180 to backwards feeble on a stage to backwheel g turn thingy to barspin? i think, and I know people liked whatever it was. Stevo did some stuff that if you have ever been to Santa Cruz and seen the spots you would think it was impossible. treeride to step back wallride? ridiculous. Jake did some amazing front wheel jibbery, Cisco did a feeble to 360 gap, and shut down this bank to sub spot behind this carpet store. Im pretty sure Jarrod is getting something together for SHook, so watch for that to drop and check it out. It'll be worth it.
Apparently the liquor was flowing freely enough to cause a little drama, but beside the one incident the night was a friendly event with a whole lot of bullshittin and plans being made to ride the next day. I had too much to drink to remember my camera but if i taken a picture it would have looked like this, I took off before the whole thing was over for a little street mission and video watchin/weed smokin. Thanks to Jarrod, 2-hip, the riders, seabright brewery, the sponsors (including transparentbmx) and anyone else who made the event possible, the bay areas (sc and sf) could use more stuff like this.

The next day the Watsonville Locals put on a Deth Ride trail jam and some people from the party made it out to ride. I went down in the morning and then unfortunately had to go to work for a few hours before i could come back. What I did see was pretty awesome. The trails were prepped perfectly

and i think every jump/line and even some new transfers got ridden, some to the point of collapse. Joey Cobbs was out shootin some photos (when he wasn't ridin the trails on Jakes bike!) so there should be some really hot photos up on sjbmx sometime this week. Joey Garcia and Mat Mardesich were out there, 3in jumps and guzzlin beer. Joey 3 turndowned the second jump in big sexy line and Mat heckled kids and riders alike while his dog barked a lot. All the locals killed it as usual, I saw some nothings from mike, amazing inverts from Dave and Gilbert, and Jay getting loose with the limbless tricks as usual. Javier and Jordan were doing 360's all over the place and Brandon York seems to have been bitten by the trick bug, cause he was throwin down. supermans mid pack and tons of style. My ankle was a little messed from a recent crash but i got way too excited to care and did some 3's and grizz airs to celebrate. People rode pretty much all day, fueled by bbq and beer, and as the sun went down everyone started to take off. An amazing weekend overall.
