sunsets

sunset today. living in the "mountains" is the best. although, 300 feet is hardly the mountains. but there are hills.
I delivered a couch to a business today, and they had some old pictures of santa cruz up. You can see where Dusty's house is if you know where to look. Tron's friend could probably find it.
go to profile racing and look for the NE Trails video. Good stuff.

and here is kurt russell and ivers in martinez. bay smog. first clip of ivers is my favorite.

Lipton Jam

Jam is over and a good time was had. A lot of people showed up to ride and watch, probably somewhere in the 200+ range or so. Fun spot/Bike Park made some money and a lot of cash got handed back to riders. People shredded in all categories (AM and PRO BMX, and Open MTB). I know Jordan won pro with some high flying action and made enough money to buy about 7 snuggies , Chris Reisner got second and enough cash to pay for his trip out here (so he wasn't able to grumble like usual). Joey Chernoff and Tony Campos and Shea Nyquist were going nuts too and I think they got some stuff.

A bunch of people took photos and shot video so as that stuff pops up I'm sure you will see it here among other places.

Kurt Russell won longest skid, and then won a fistful of cash for highest bunnyhop at 41 inches. A guy who was shredding all night won the long jump comp with a whopping 22.5 feet. The "sway back sally" ramp and the small spine were the only casualties of the night, and luckily Jordan didn't die when the sway back ramp collapsed while he was riding it at top speed.
Beer flowed and the parties that started in the warehouse and parking lot were taken to some after hours spots.
Big Thanks to the sponsors: Ramp Rats, 2HIP bikes, Solid Bikes, Ibis BIkes, Honest Tea (not to be confused with Honesto T), Deth Ride, Sin CAL 4130, Lewis Tree Service and Red Bull (who showed up and gave out drinks, then got there cars stuck in the mud and watched as Shea Nyquist joyrode in a stolen Red Bull vehicle).

A special thanks to: Jesse Nickell Sr. who organized that contest and made sure things went smoothly. Barry Swenson Builders for letting us use the space to ride in all the time and have a pretty grimy contest. Thanks to everyone for showing up.

Mike Hernandez gets his own special thank you. Mike spent about 30 out of the last 48 hours in the warehouse making this thing possible. He secured most of the prizes for the comp, and practically built every ramp in there with minimal help. Next time you see Mike, buy him a beer.

TORRENTIAL RAIN!

Well, it has actually been pretty nice this week, but it was a whole different story the last few weeks. A lot of the spots we ride are pretty sandy, so a little rain can be great to make things tacky and rideable, but a lot of rain can be disaster. Jumps and berms melting like the wicked witch. We showed up to some trails the other day and found this....
But after an hour or two of hard work, with a bunch of people, we were doing this....well, other people were doing sweeter stuff than this turnbar setup thing, but you know. smiling. just like mike in the background.

Photos by Luke Brennan.

Happy Birthday Ron!

Ron Wilkerson turned 43 a couple weeks back, and headed down to Westward to shred. And shred he did. 11 foot tables on a pork. Nothing needs to be said about how awesome Ron is cause everybody knows it deep down. Check out this video of all your bmx heroes bmx hero. I think I am gonna start calling Kurt out on 900s and stuff when its my birthday.

SUCCESS (longest post ever)

So, City Council meeting was a success. We now have a permanent home for the bike park at Depot Park, which we can hopefully get going by June. A bunch of us showed up and sat around for an hour waiting to say why a bike park is necessary. Highlights definitely included little Merc getting on the mike, and live television (he is what, 5 years old?) and ending his speech by shouting "QUESTIONS?" at the mayor. Awesome. Oh, and we cant forget the vietnam vet and self proclaimed "King of Marijauna" and his epic speech about why the mayor, city council and everyone in the world should be smoking weed, and how it should be major industry here so we can export it to "all the vodka drinking lands".
The King of Marijuana making his case.

B-rad, Merc's dad Glenn, Jarrod and me at the city council meeting.

Mike was nervous, but you never would have known listening from the audience. When he came back and sat down he said "Dude, I almost fainted".
Photos by Luke Brennan. Luke got a new camera and sent me some really great photos. Expect x-plosion (read with Russian accent) of updates.

The city council members were very receptive and we encountered nearly zero opposition, except for the "fiscal conservative" who needs to read up on CA liability laws. Thanks to Jesse Nickell and Barry Swenson Builders, Dannettee Shoemaker and Steve Hammock at Parks and Rec, Jarrod, Mike and everyone who came to all the meetings.

Dave Reuss and Snacks were just in town for a bit doing some work for Family Cycling, always a good time when that old salt is around. Rode some trails, checked in on the warehouse and ate that pizza! In case I never posted this picture (I am sure I did...) here is a picture of Dave Reussting from back when Sasquatch Canyon was more than just a blog.

It's like summer in a bottle. or something. all the trails look amazing. so nice I watched it twice. I posted it small, but click on the video and select "high quality" anyway, and then grab a beer.

NOW, go to Country Clubbin, its the best thing in the santa cruz blogosphere.

show up at the jam on friday, win stuff from solid bikes, 2hip, Watsonville Pawnshop and others. Oh, And REDBULL IS GOING TO BE THERE!!!!!

Also, while on the phone with Crazy Chris yesterday... a bird shit on my head.

claustrophobia

So, I was looking over the blog the other day and realized that so many of the last posts have dealt with the warehouse, and all the pictures have been indoor pictures. Now don't get me wrong, I love the warehouse, and love having a place to ride after work or in the rain, and the Jam on Friday (see post below) is gonna be awesome, but the blog was just starting to look kind of... well, closed in. That coupled with the all the rain, which forced us into said warehouse had me feeling a little cabin fever. So, to combat some of that I figured I would post a bunch of things that happened outside. Yesterday we even went out to some trails and got them running and snuck in a session before the rain came. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures from that (luke?) but here are some videos from other people's outdoor adventures and a couple cell phone shots.

amazing Arizona helmet cam footage from Tom Arkus at Vinyl. Taken at the Rigg's trails (another Jackson!) I am a big helmet cam fan. jim jam.

Ted Van Orman. So rad! Go to life? to see more of what he does.

Oh, also go to a book store and buy/look at Dirt (a mtb magazine from over the pond) to find a full page photo of Jim Tharpe (www.jimjam.com/dudebrah/) boosting in some local woods. Awesome! And apparently Luke has a pretty GQ shot in the new issue of Decline. Jim got a shot or two as well. Spreads seen on the Black Market site.

WAREHOUSE JAM!! FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27TH

Jam at the Warehouse on Friday, February 27th. Hopefully we will have a more official flier up shortly, but in case we drop the ball here are the details:

Friday, February 27th

BMX and MTB open Jam sessions. Practice starts at 6pm, and get the jam going around 8pm. $5 dollar entry fee with half of the cash being used to buy wood for the new funspot bikepark, and the other half being given out as cash prizes. Riders who enter will vote by secret ballot at the end of the night for King of the Warehouse.

There will be some side contests with dollar entry fees so bring some one dollar bills! High air contests on the box, spine and 7 foot quarter. Long jump and long jump 180 contests (watch out!), bunnyhop contest, and longest skid and manual contest.

YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET TO RIDE, and SIGN A WAIVER. If you are under 18 you must have a parent or guardian sign it, so print it out now. Go to jumpjam.net scroll down until you see "waiver form", click on it, download the pdf print it, sign it. Not as hard as it sounds. And go ahead and sign the waiver right now, even if you are over 18 and that way you can just show up and ride.

Should be a good time, the contest will go late, so you can sleep in the warehouse afterward. Bring a sleeping bag and a pad to sleep on.

We are working on the warehouse right now to get it ready. We already have a 6 foot street spine, 7 foot quarter, trannied box jump and vert wall. Hopefully a few more ramps before the jam. There is also various rails and little ramps in the warehouse. Bring wood and get a bunch of high fives!

check SJBMX.com for directions, or email me, jacksondallen at gmail dot com. Bring your friends.

DOING WORK!

100 POSTS YOUNG!

The Canyon just turned a 100! Yeah 100 posts....and in honor of that, here is an tasty video that Chris Reisner put together recently. All trail footage, in fact all trail footage from one epic spot. Thanks for always having us down there guys. And nice job Chris. Go to vimeo to watch it big and in HD.

Oh! Also I got the Dig Trails Issue today...and by got I mean I bought every copy at Borders. The cashier thought I had a screw loose, "You know these are all the same magazine, right?"

buttload of ambiance

Some rain this weekend, and with it some good sessions in the warehouse. After much discussion it was found that a dirty warehouse isn't a bad place to spend a friday night. Maybe its all that ambiance. A few more pictures. Dusty has been behind the lens a lot lately. Here are some pictures he took.

Always an artist. Dusty's x-ray vision.

Joey Cobbs. JoeyBEEVE?

flickout.

And here are a couple of Brad Davies photos
Jarrod Allen going up.

Dusty on the other side of the lens. Looks fake.

And a video from some of the mountain bike kids. A post below details all the hard work a lot of these kids have been doing. Went out and saw some more of it in person today. Backyard hot spots.

June-uary is over, Fe-BRRR-uary is here.

Actually yesterday was very warm. Rain is on its way though. Check the weather function in the sidebar. Here are some warehouse photos to get people excited about inclement weather.

I wonder how long Mike has been doing turndowns... A long time from the looks of this photo. He had an ear infection during this session, something about bad Gerber.

I am pretty confindent this was Jordan's lowest air this night. Huge. I have my money on Jordan for high air winner.

Me realizing what color my bike really is, while getting ready to land backwards.

All photos by Brad Davies.

The warehouse has really been coming together. Jam there on the 27th I believe. Email me or ask someone for directions and information, there will be a small entry fee some of which will used to help buy plywood for the ramps, with the rest being given out as prizes. High air contest on the spine and quarter, manual contest, bunnyhop contest, long jump contest.

Chunky hills locals have been up a bunch to ride the warehouse, and we have been down a lot to ride the trails, which are perfect and somehow still improving. Chris Reisner came down to shred, and shred he did! He has some video stills on his blog. Maybe we will see the footage one day!

Funspot is in the process of moving. Depot park (right around the corner from the existing park) will be the new location. We are currently attending City Council meeting to rally support for the project. The next meeting (and most important one) is on February 24th. Hopefully the whole move will mean a fresh new design and an opening date sometime during the summer.
